What changes had
to be made from the original book to the screen play?
- Making larger roles for the female characters s in the
film
The most important thing was to add
more roles for female characters to balance the male and female and to create
Romance. Because the book was written in the 1950's the female characters
were under written and there was only one page of dialogue given to women
characters. The script writers made this change to appeal to women movie goers and to reflect the male female equality of modern life.
Arwen's role was a short role in the film.
- Taking out (omitting) certain characters in the film look at this
site for help
Glorfindel and Tom Bombadil were
taken out of the film. This was because the Script writers wanted to shorten the story to make
it fit in the film. So characters just played someone else are background, not
their own story.
- Writing an exposition (what has happened before the film starts)
scene for the beginning of the film
They montage the scene from the war
jumping in to different scenes. They showed and spoke about the power of the
rings and with a voice over they made the scenes more sensible by giving a
history. Also the ring was shown as really important and they
took the history of the ring up to the present day by showing Bilbo.
- Working with the actors as characters to create some parts of the
script.
